Activities for Home
- One of the most fun ways to learn at home is cooking! Have your child help you cook a meal. They will learn measurements as well as basic cooking skills and you get a helper. Talk about the differences between solids (like flour), liquids (like milk), and gasses (like water vapor) while cooking. Make predictions. What do you think will happen when we put the bread in oven?
- Give a small allowance and help them balance their money. Make a goal together of something to save for like a new toy. Have your child keep all their money in one place and write or chart down every time they are closer to reaching their goal and being able to buy themselves something.
Community Learning Opportunities
- Have your child give money to the cashier when you go to the store. They'll be able to learn about money management as well as basic math skills.
- Whenever you go somewhere, even if it's just the grocery store, have your child be the navigator. Use a laminated map and a highlighter to trace the route you will need to get there and they can help give you directions to get there.
- Use the scale in the grocery store to weigh different fruits and vegetables. Make comparisons. Which foods are heavier? Which foods are lighter? Do all bananas weigh the same amount? Why are some things heavier than others? Everything is a learning opportunity!
