The RCMPlan: The Responsible Classroom Management Plan
Major Principles
Responsibility is taught and incorporated instructionally within a warm and inviting classroom:
Standards, guidelines, and expected behaviors replaced rigid school and classroom rules:
- Guidelines: specific directions on how to meet standards
Consequences teach students to self-correct inappropriate behaviors and assume responsibility for their actions:
- Implement democratic principles in teaching and leadership roles
- Human equality, dignity, and self-worth, participation in decision making at all levels, and acceptance of the consequences of behaviors should be concept integrated into the curriculum and constantly taught
Standards, guidelines, and expected behaviors replaced rigid school and classroom rules:
- Do not use rules
- Instead implement:
- Guidelines: specific directions on how to meet standards
- Expected behaviors should be both grade level and developmentally appropriate
- Teachers should act swiftly, consistently and unemotionally
Consequences teach students to self-correct inappropriate behaviors and assume responsibility for their actions:
- Consequences should be logical (ex. "Student is to come to school prepared to learn" Did not finish homework assignment? Logical Consequence: Do it during lunch, break, recess, or after school)
- NOT a punishment
- Treatment should be individualized
